Best of 2019… So Far | Staff Picks

With 2019 more than half way over, we decided to select our best movies and video games picks of 2019… so far.

Best Movies

‘Toy Story 4’

Full review

“Toy Story 4” is a film no one asked for and could’ve easily been a soulless sequel in the same vein as “Cars 2” and “The Incredibles 2,” but it managed to tell a story unique to the franchise well worth its nine year wait.

Like “Cars 3,” this film sees its protagonist, living toy Sheriff Woody (Tom Hanks) deal with being old and less useful, coping with his new life and finding new ways to be happy and find fulfillment. In many ways, its a sendoff to Woody and the Toy Story franchise, one that we thought we got in “Toy Story 3,” but this time with no loose ends, and for that, “Toy Story 4” is one of the strongest films Pixar has released in years.

Among the many films that have captured the attention of audiences, “Yesterday” has a feeling of heart that makes it stand out. Directed by Danny Boyle, the movie takes the speculative lens of a world without the Beatles’ music. The story is complimented by the sharp chemistry between the cast. Himesh Patel’s Jack Malik conveys the passion he has not only to play music, but to also share the neglected work of the Fab Four to the rest of the world. While it follows a standard story, the third act has a message the speaks true not only to musicians, but also to anyone with artistic aspirations.

Best Video Game

‘Fire Emblem: Three Houses’

Full review

A completely new twist on the renowned franchise, this game obliterated expectations and was just about perfect in every way.

It retains the “Fire Emblem” feel- the combat system and general progression of units in and out of combat- but it added an interactive, immersive story with plenty of replay value and excellent story writing. Easy for anyone of any particular age group or demographic to enjoy; you’ll get hooked very quickly playing it.
