It was pretty inevitable that former “Bad Batch” member Crosshair (Dee Bradley Baker) would catch up with the group, as apparently he was tipped off by scrappers at the end of the last episode that they are on a Clone Wars-era Republic ship scrapyard. Meanwhile, the Kaminoans are growing uneasy at the Empire’s plans to phase out stormtroopers, and have hired a bounty hunter, Cad Bane (Corey Burton), who was a prominent character in “The Clone Wars”, to retrieve Omega (Michelle Ang), who apparently is part of some contingency plan of theirs.
The Bad Batch normally would have moved on by now, but they discover that many of the ships still have some valuable commodities like explosives that they can sell to help get them out of debt, which keeps them on the planet just long enough for Crosshair to intercept them, which is a pretty good fight, as Crosshair is pretty good at predicting their moves, up until the group is pushed against the wall and have to improvise. The episode ends with Crosshair shaken, with half of his face burned off — just in case we needed to be reminded that he’s a bad guy.
Also, Bane guns Bad Batch leader Hunter (also Dee Bradley Baker) down, though it’s revealed that he is alive, although very roughed up. Bane will presumably take Omega to Kamino, or try to, as the Bad Batch will most likely be in hot pursuit, though they still have Crosshair on their trails.
Overall, it’s a decent episode, and I liked how we got to see more of Crosshair’s leadership style in this episode, even if he is under the control of an inhibitor chip (though it’s possible that he’s not, and is just a really cold person). Seeing Bane was nice, though I felt like his appearance was a bit underwhelming, but it makes sense why he’d appear in this episode, as showrunner Dave Filoni probably feels a need to explain what happened to him after “The Clone Wars.”
I just feel like there wasn’t much of a midseason finale, seeing as we’re officially at the halfway point for Season 1. Hopefully the finale makes up for it.
