Cool It With The “Spider-Man: No Way Home” Spoilers | Column from the Editor

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” has been out for a few days now, and it’s arguably the biggest film of the year, already collecting over $500 million at the worldwide box office. This is very good for the film industry, as few films have been able to even cross $400 million in revenue, as 2021, while more fruitful than 2020, has been a far cry from how viable it was in 2019, when nine films earned over $1 billion (no film has earned that much so far in 2021).

But “No Way Home” being a hit in theaters has also come with an unfortunate reality: packed theaters at a time where the more transmissible and vaccine-resistant omicron variant of the coronavirus is running rampant, which undoubtedly will prompt many — myself included — to wait until theatrical traffic dies down a bit before seeing the film. And I admit, especially because the film poses to be the biggest crossover event of the year, I had to check Twitter and YouTube just to get confirmation that a certain Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were in fact, in the film, as their involvement is a key selling point for me.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find that info out without seeing posts from some inconsiderate users that (spoilers) dies. And it seems like some individuals are keen on leaking far more than just visual confirmation of Maguire and Garfield’s involvement — which, let’s be honest, won’t be a spoiler for very long. In fact, I fully expect them to appear in the film’s official marketing once it’s been out long enough.

It’s time to cool it with the “No Way Home” spoilers. Please respect the fact that it’s probably the biggest event film of the year, and not everyone will see it while the theaters are packed to the brim. No one wants to find out if a major character dies on the internet, and please stop trying to leak this entire film on social media before it’s even wrapped up its first week in theaters.
