Another Thrilling Heist Prep Episode In Space Scotland | “Star Wars: Andor” Season 1: Episode 5 “The Axe Forgets” Review

After last week’s heist prep episode, this week’s “Andor” episode really needed to see the heist in action … but apparently its showrunner knows better. Instead, we get another heist prep episode that largely takes place on the world of Aldhani (it’s basically space Scotland), that pretty much repeats all the notable beats of Episode 4.

Here are my initial thoughts on this episode. This written review will go more in-depth.

The only drama of note is that the rebel crew Cassian (Diego Luna) joined still does not trust him. Particularly Arvil Skeen (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) gets on his case, which leads to Cassian’s admittance that he joined the mission for money and that Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay), the group’s leader, had a choice between taking Cassian on or aborting their mission to rob the Imperial payroll center they’ve been scoping out for months.

We also get some scenes with Syril Karn (Kyle Soller), who is sulking in his recent unemployment. His mother talks of a powerful uncle that will help him out. I think it’s most likely that we see Syril make a comeback as an Imperial; his need for order and perfection makes him well-suited for that organization.

Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård) is also nervous about the mission, which gives some tension to it. We also see more of Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), though her scenes are pretty redundant compared to what we saw of her last episode.

Redundant perfectly describes 80 percent of this episode. The 20 percent that progresses the show is good stuff that I would keep in, but I definitely think that this and last episode could have and should have been cut into one episode. While it is true that this show has a slow pace — and there’s nothing wrong with that — this episode just takes too much time covering ground that was already communicated clearly in Episode 4.

With that being said, it is also perfectly inoffensive and mostly fine, though a little boring. This show really needs to pick up next episode.

“Star Wars: Andor” Season 1: Episode 5 “The Axe Forgets” gets a 6/10

Rating: 3 out of 5.
